The Big Day

The careers fair was very successful, with the biggest turn out ever for students and companies. Read more about the careers fair at the GAAPS Blog.

After careers fair we went to Melrose Arch to stay at the Protea Fire and Ice hotel. Melrose Arch is a vibrant area of bars, piazzas, shopping and hotels.  The hotel was built especially for the world cup visitors and is a boutique style, 5 star hotel.  We much preferred the area and hotel and the food was excellent.

Actuaries Wanted for South Africa

Breakfast meeting at 7:30am in the hotel – we met with a Senior Consultant who might be joining us to head up our operations in South Africa.

2:30 pm – Client visit.  Looking for a consultant with reinsurance experience, they have promised to send us a detailed job description ASAP.

4:00pm Another client visit. This time we picked up several vacancies for qualified actuaries and experienced PTQs.

The Sandton Sun and a Candidate for Lunch

Arrived in Jo-burg and went straight to hotel, the Sandton Sun located in Sandton, a large business and financial district filled with hotels, shopping complex and residential area.

We found the traffic to be very congested on the highways from the airport to Sandton.  It took about 50 minutes.  First impressions of the hotel were very good.  A large 5* hotel, big rooms with internet connections, large flat screen TV.  Room service entailed two visits, once to clean and change towels etc and later to turn down bed /close curtains, put out slippers etc and of course the chocolate on the pillow!

They are very geared up for the business traveller with a Business centre offering computers, printers, faxes etc.  From inside the hotel you have access to Sandton City Shopping Centre, large collection of department stores, fashion shops variety of smaller shops.

We managed to get lost quite a few times trying to get our bearings.  But found Mandela Square with all the restaurants surrounding the statue of Nelson Mandela.

We met with a candidate and took him to lunch in the hotel restaurant.

Up, Off and Away

A perfect start to our trip began with a visit to the Seafood bar at Heathrow where we had smoked salmon accompanied by chilled champagne.  Then a 10 hour flight during the night, arriving in Jo-burg at 6.30am the next day.

South Africa Trip

GAAPS are co-hosting the 4th Annual Actuarial Careers Fair at the University of Pretoria on Friday 27th August 2010.  Geraldine Kaye, Wanda Myers and Tony Snoyman going over to Johannesburg on Tuesday 26th August for a week, watch this blog for ongoing updates of their trip to South Africa.

Swiss Friends, Enemies and Allies

On Dr Kaye’s most recent visit to Switzerland, as well as the usual shoe shopping, one of the contacts that she visited was Serge Roux-Levrat,  an actuary she has known for many years and who also runs his own search / in-placement consultancy.

He had recently published an article on how to turn your enemies into powerful allies and gave her a copy. She was so impressed that we have attached it here.

Are You Friends with an Actuarial Triathlete?

Terren Friend will be competing in the Eton Super-sprint Triathlon on Sunday 16th May 2010. It’s her first triathlon since June 2006 (except the office triathlon in October 2009), so it’s only a short distance event to get back into it. The distances are 400m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run.

The event will be held at Eton College, with the swim in the rowing lake and the cycling and running on the paths surrounding the lake. Terren is hoping to finish it in good time despite having just taken a few years out of triathlon competing.

GAAPS Not Grounded

Sophie had been visiting us at GAAPS HQ in London when the volcanic travel ban struck and she was unable to fly home to France as planned.

At 11pm on Thursday night Sima managed to book her a Eurostar ticket for Saturday morning, tickets for the next leg of the journey back to Marseilles were further complicated by a train strike in France!

Sophie eventually arrived home at midnight after a long and stressful journey and she is now pleased to be able to get stuck back into filling vacancies.

Jane Weiss is still trapped in South Africa and we eagerly await her return.
